Available now: Title track from ‘Distancia’ by Manuel Valera’s New Cuban Express Big Band

We’re releasing the title track from the second album by Manuel Valera and his New Cuban Express Big Band.

It’s a beautifully sorrowful piece composed about traveling artists and the necessity of being away from home. After a languid introduction in a slow waltz feel, the beautiful melody is heard from flugelhorn and tenor saxophone, then with a larger ensemble, including wordless vocals from Bogna Kicińska. Lyrical solos from Charles Pillow (soprano sax) and Mike Fahie (trombone) explore the space and build to a climax before the ensemble melody returns. Influenced by the writing of Kenny Wheeler, this is magnificent ensemble arranging from Valera, with varied textures sounding more like a full orchestra than a big band.
