Dave will be on tour with Italian pianist Franco D’Andrea this July in Europe. They will tour Portugal, Italy, and Spain July 10-21 in a quartet with Italian bassist Federica Michisanti and the American drummer Dan Weiss. Dave had the following to say about the tour:

Franco has a unique, one of a kind, touch on the piano. It comes from a place for which I have deep respect and love. Hearing Franco makes me want to play. That’s how I met him and how we connected.

The quartet with Franco comes from an idea I had some years ago. It was delayed by time and circumstance, and also by the virus. Now we are ready to do it. I am fascinated by Franco’s system of linear motion and harmony based on his interval system. I have done some work with it on my own and it has a way of creating a unique language in the music which we will develop together in this new music.

I wrote a number of pieces using Franco’s system. I also introduced this system to bassist Federica Michisanti of Roma, who has now also spoken with Franco about it. Dan Weiss, drummer from Brooklyn, will also join us.

Over the past months, we were able to rehearse remotely and create recordings of these pieces. All of my new music is based on Franco’s interval systems. I am grateful to Franco for agreeing to play them! We will also play Franco’s music in the context of dialogues using this new system. We also plan to play a few of our favorites we’d don’t often get to play from Monk and Ellington/Strayhorn.
