Dave Douglas shares “Grits,” the third single from his upcoming album Four Freedoms, out January 30, 2026 on Greenleaf Music. The album’s opening track (and the final piece performed in the concert), “Grits” is a joyous rhythmic feature for drummer Joey Baron. It follows a 32 bar rhythm changes form with a tag, turning structure into play. Baron leads the melody from behind the kit, Nick Dunston provides propelling walking basslines and Marta Warelis interjects playfully while Douglas glues the conversation together.
Playful, driving, and full of forward momentum, “Grits” sets the tone for the album’s spirit of freedom, interaction, and invention. Listen below:
