REVIEW: Financial Times on Secular Psalms

Reviews are coming in for Secular Psalms, the new album from Dave Douglas!

In the UK’s Financial Times, Mike Hobart mentions the commission celebrating van Eyck’s “Adoration of the Mystic Lamb” and says this:

The original idea was to capture the painting and its chequered history in sound, and this remains the music’s core. The opening “Arrival” evokes the muted colours and dank interiors of the painting’s outer panels with a minor-key theme and a lattice of sonorous tuba, grainy trumpet and stinging Frederik Leroux lead guitar. Vocal tracks feature texts drawn from the Latin Mass and poems by 15th-century French poet and Van Eyck contemporary Christine de Pisan. “If I’m in Church More Often Now” is pensive, the mysterious “Ah Moon” floats over electronics and brushstroke drums. Contemporary flourishes surface on every track.
