Dave Douglas releases “Come Sunday,” the third single from his forthcoming album Transcend, out April 24, 2026.
It features new original compositions alongside three Duke Ellington works, newly reimagined for this ensemble. The album opens with a loving arrangement of Ellington’s sacred piece “Come Sunday,” from the 1943 Black, Brown and Beige Suite. Douglas offers a soulful interpretation with slippery guitar lines, mournful trumpet melodies and chorale-like harmonies from saxophone and cello. The track sits alongside a dreamlike version of “Heaven” and an infectiously groovy reworking of “Oclupaca.”
Featuring Douglas’s GIFTS Quintet, the track highlights the ensemble’s distinctive instrumentation and deep collective sensitivity. With a reverence for Ellington’s spiritual vision and a commitment to forward-looking expression, the group brings new dimension and intimacy to this timeless composition.
“Come Sunday” is available now on all streaming platforms, and Transcend is available for pre-order here.
Transcend communicates wonder, awe and connection – a reconciliation between spirit and craft, and between the individual and community.
