Hear “Mondrian” from Dave Douglas ‘Dizzy Atmosphere’ now

Today we’re releasing the second single from Dizzy Atmosphere, the upcoming forthcoming Dave Douglas album inspired by trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and featuring trumpeter Dave Adewumi, guitarist Matthew Stevens, pianist Fabian Almazan, bassist Carmen Rothwell, and drummer Joey Baron

“Mondrian” is a tribute to both Gillespie and the great Dutch abstract artist, Piet Mondrian. While the head includes a quote from Gillespie’s classic tune “Bebop” in the head, it was also inspired by Mondrian’s 1942 painting “Broadway Boogie Woogie.” Sometimes described as a visual representation of syncopation, Douglas feels the painting not only captures “the emotion and excitement of New York from that time,” but parallels the way bebop propelled jazz from linear, single-note lines to the chromatic harmony used today.
