Greenleaf Artist Picks Pt. II
Back in the holiday season, we introduced Greenleaf Artist Picks. Here’s how that works: artists from our label highlight two or three albums each, one on Greenleaf and one from anywhere. You get to hear in their own words why they enjoy those albums.
Well, we’re doing it again! We’ve got a new round of Artist Picks for you to check out and add to your collection.
Picks by DAVID SANFORD
Greenleaf:
- Casting for Gravity by Donny McCaslin: “live videos of some of these tracks showed up in my crawl a while back and I was floored by how fertile and driving the rhythm section’s grooves are, as well as the leader’s introspective blowing.”
- Flatbed Buggy by Rudy Royston: “the writing is inventive throughout, but he’s really got a kind of post-New Orleans thing going with the amazing counterpoint (without dividing it into “front line”, etc) but offset by the presence of the accordion and the cello which suggest another kind of chamber music. Really inspiring music.”
Anywhere:
- Idiom by Anna Webber (Pi Recordings): “Anna writes highly original compositions for small and large groups that make judicious and virtuosic use of extended techniques in both her writing and her playing.”
Picks by TRISH CLOWES
Greenleaf:
- Home by Song Yi Jeon & Vinicius Gomes: “This album has such a striking soundscape, it immediately piqued my curiosity. Beautiful clarity and poise throughout, stunning improvisations.”
Anywhere:
- Octopus by Kris Davis & Craig Taborn: “I love the work of both Kris Davis and Craig Taborn, and together – whoa! This has been a favourite album of mine now for a while.”
