Dave Douglas Devotion Trio plays Philadelphia October 18-19
Dave Douglas brings his Devotion Trio to Philadelphia for two nights of shows at South Jazz Kitchen on October 18 and 19.
Featuring pianist Uri Caine and drummer Kate Gentile, the group explores the music from Devotion, the Dave Douglas record was released in 2019. It is the sequel to Present Joys, the duo album recorded by Douglas and Caine a few years back, centered on renditions of Sacred Harp tunes. The new project features new original compositions by Douglas, recorded with drummer Andrew Cyrille. The trio original compositions by Douglas in devotion to many of today’s greatest composers including Carla Bley, Dizzy Gillespie, Mary Lou Williams, and Franco D’Andrea.
For these shows rummer Kate Gentile, a rising star known both for her playing and composing, inhabits the drum chair allowing for further exploration of this repertoire.
