Dave asked me to post about Levon Helm knowing my love for his music. Dave actually got to play with him on the record Jericho. All of us at Greenleaf mourn the loss. My heart sank a little bit earlier in the week when I heard that Helm's family issued their statement of his decline. After losing his voice a few years back from radiation treatments only to regain it and reinvigorate his career, I guess I hoped he'd pull through, again—he was only 71.

We're extremely excited and happy to have added bassist Linda Oh to our artist stable this year. Greenleaf will be releasing her new album, Initial Here, worldwide on May 22nd, 2012. Expect to hear some audio from the session soon.

Every time I see a teaching artist talk about music I learn something new...

As we sift through our epically full inboxes and move further and further away from vacation daze, we can't help but get a little nostalgic for 2011—even as it's just passed. There was a new website, a new music series, new artists, new albums... it seems everything was NEW last year. So before we can move on to all the going-on's we have scheduled this calendar year, a quick recap of some of the music we released in 2011 is necessary for us in this crazy hit-it-and-forget-it internet world we've all grown accustomed to.

The end of a year is always a time to look around at some excellent nonprofits and charities that we can help. And when we were at Jazz Standard celebrating GPS with four different groups, we took the time to have all the musicians sign the Three Views box set. We will be selling them and donating all the proceeds to charity.

Joe Lovano & Dave Douglas Quintet, Sound Prints; an all-star ensemble including up and coming pianist Lawrence Fields, bassist James Genus, and drummer Joey Barron. Performing new repertoire as well as brand new Shorter compositions in direct collaboration with Shorter, the quintet is less an homage to Wayne Shorter and more of a unique convergence of three unparalleled trajectories.
