We're always really excited about music that begs you not to define it, music that is truly unique and individual, music that is a deeply emotional and reaches people. Lucky for us, Matt Ulery sent us his new 2-disc album "By A Little Light" late last year.

NY Times: Casual listeners to jazz who might not tune into big differences between bass players would notice Linda Oh. Her music leans forward at you. She has a percussive touch, graceful and sometimes aggressive, and she likes playing fast, walking or soloing or delivering a jagged ostinato. She’s justifying the role of bassist as bandleader, starting the tunes, pushing the band, delivering clean, strong rhythm and melody.

Dave asked me to post about Levon Helm knowing my love for his music. Dave actually got to play with him on the record Jericho. All of us at Greenleaf mourn the loss. My heart sank a little bit earlier in the week when I heard that Helm's family issued their statement of his decline. After losing his voice a few years back from radiation treatments only to regain it and reinvigorate his career, I guess I hoped he'd pull through, again—he was only 71.

Every time I see a teaching artist talk about music I learn something new...

As we sift through our epically full inboxes and move further and further away from vacation daze, we can't help but get a little nostalgic for 2011—even as it's just passed. There was a new website, a new music series, new artists, new albums... it seems everything was NEW last year. So before we can move on to all the going-on's we have scheduled this calendar year, a quick recap of some of the music we released in 2011 is necessary for us in this crazy hit-it-and-forget-it internet world we've all grown accustomed to.

The end of a year is always a time to look around at some excellent nonprofits and charities that we can help. And when we were at Jazz Standard celebrating GPS with four different groups, we took the time to have all the musicians sign the Three Views box set. We will be selling them and donating all the proceeds to charity.
