Carla Bley Composition Competition 2020

The Afro Latin Jazz Alliance is pleased to announce its first Carla Bley Composition Competition.

DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this competition is to further the goal of the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance to celebrate, preserve, and maintain an international network of composers, performers, conductors, directors, and champions of Afro Latin jazz music. Open to all composers from around the world from all ages. The winning composition will be performed at The Town Hall, in New York City on May 8, 2020 as part of the program in the concert titled: “The Lord is Listenin’ To Ya, Hallelujah! – Celebrating Carla Bley” by Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra with Carla Bley, Steve Swallow, and other Special Guests. The winning composer should be present for the premiere, travel & lodging expenses covered by the participant.

DETAILS
Submit a new work specifically written for this competition, between 5-7 minutes long with the characteristics below.

The composition may use all or some of the following instruments: 4 trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 bass trombone (tuba optional), 2 alto saxophones doubling flute, 2 tenor saxophones doubling soprano saxophone & clarinet, 1 baritone saxophone doubling bass clarinet, piano, organ, drums, and 2 afro latin percussion. The minimum instrumentation must include at least organ, rhythm section and horn section, however, it is preferred to use the entire roster of instruments as listed above. The piece should reflect a knowledge of Carla’s work and be Afro Latin aware. There are no stylistic limitations and playability is a huge factor. Submit score, parts & midi file.
