Dave Douglas GIFTS release second single “Seven Years Ago”

Today sees the release of “Seven Years Ago”, a Dave Douglas composition from 2017, re-arranged in 2023 specifically for musicians James Brandon Lewis, Rafiq Bhatia and Ian Chang.

“With some foreboding, this tune spilled out of my subconscious in early 2017. It would be the first and last shadowed by that dark moment for our country. As we enter another fractured year, it popped up for me again and I made a brand new arrangement for Rafiq, Ian, and James.”

The single is taken from the forthcoming full length release GIFTS which was recorded by the quartet in one day in Brooklyn, towards the end of 2023. The album is an adventurous exploration of the genre through the lens of composer Billy Strayhorn, covering four of his compositions, alongside six Dave Douglas originals. The quartet have added a fifth member, cellist Tomeka Reid, and are currently on TOUR and have played shows so far in Paris, Gent and Zurich. Tonight (March 12) they will perform at the venue Cankarjevi torki in Slovenia.
