WBGO features an exclusive premiere of "Curly" from 'Devotion'

We're big fans of the Newark jazz radio station WBGO and their weekly new release feature Take Five. Today they're featuring an exclusive premier of the lead track from the upcoming Dave Douglas album Devotion.

Nate Chinen has this to say about "Curly":

But the album’s opener stakes out different territory, with just Caine and Cyrille in a playful push-pull exchange. Caine begins the track in a pugilistic 12/8 polyrhythm, before shifting into a steadier gear. But with Cyrille for a conversational partner, he knows he can duck out of the pocket without losing a step. There’s a great deal of kinetic energy in the track — even when, at around 2:30, the tempo opens up and relaxes for a spell. It’s not hard to picture Douglas in the control room, nodding and smiling at this summit, as he waits his turn.

Check out the piece here and hear this great track featuring and Uri Caine, and Andrew Cyrille.

Pre-order the album on Bandcamp and iTunes now. The album will be released on Friday.

'Devotion' is the Guardian's Album of the Month

The Guardian gives Devotion a four-star review! And they've named the upcoming album by Dave Douglas and Uri Caine, and Andrew Cyrille as their 'Album of the Month' for May 2019! John Fordham says:

The playing is intimate, mutually responsive, rhythmically capricious but often genially swinging, too.

'Devotion' is a DownBeat Editor's Pick

Devotion from Dave Douglas and Uri Caine, and Andrew Cyrille is an Editor's Pick in this month's Downbeat Magazine.

In addition to noting the album's "inspired interplay," writer J.D. Considine has this to say:

"... devotion can be offered in a variety of ways, and no single version is better than the others. Perhaps that’s why the album ends with Alexander Johnson’s sacred harp hymn, “Devotion,” and a performance that captures both the literal and figurative meanings of the word, as well as offering some of the album’s most inspired interplay."

The album is available for pre-order the album on Bandcamp and iTunes ahead of release day on Friday, May 17.

The New York Times previews the weekend's Dave Douglas ENGAGE shows

Thanks to Giovanni Russonello for previewing this weekend's ENGAGE shows in Brooklyn:

"Douglas, 56, is good at pulling musicians together in contexts that support their musical voices but sound different from what they typically do. That’s the case with Engage, a new ensemble that features five younger improvisers, each aligned with a different corner of the avant-garde. As Engage, they play low-boil, medium-tempo music soaked in lovely harmonies; it’s not about centrifugal motion or free improvising so much as it’s about depth and connection and body."
