Greg Ward's 'Stomping Off From Greenwood' is Bandcamp's Album of the Day

Greg Ward's Stomping Off From Greenwood has been chosen as the Album of the Day by Bandcamp Daily.

In his review, Mike West says:

"That Stomping Off From Greenwood freely weighs progressive jazz concepts against sounds from Chicago’s avant-rock scene is not entirely unexpected, given their hometown’s reputation for off-kilter musical fusion. Importantly, the band’s interplay gestures beyond that storied starting point; its sound—intricate and yet edgy, melodic but distorted, with stomping rhythms and a confrontational mien—has as much in common with proto-punkers Television as with post-rockers Tortoise. It’s a zesty development—and, despite its three-piece command crew, a thoroughly individual one for Ward et al."

Ahead of tomorrow's release, you can get three tracks now when you pre-order the album now on Bandcamp and iTunes.

ENGAGE | One: Showing Up

ENGAGE One: Showing Up

"Showing Up". That’s what so many of us did over the past year. Change is coming, and it feels like we’re collectively waking up to the bigger, more fundamental changes that need to happen. We won’t all agree about everything, but there is a sense of common purpose regarding the dangers of our current situation.

Jeff Parker plays a beautiful solo on this one, and I can’t tell you how stoked I was to play collectively with the full band.

Click here to learn more about the ENGAGE Subscriber Series. Program notes can be found here.

Greenleaf Subscribers can stream and download "Showing Up"on Bandcamp. We've posted a Public Preview of the track here.

ENGAGE: Program Notes

ENGAGE

Optimism. Action. Community.

ENGAGE is a direct descendant of UPLIFT, the 2018 set of compositions dedicated to positive action. We will be following up with all the organizations and causes invoked in that piece. And engaged in community and activism. People showed up in 2018, and our hope is that this trend will continue. We are going to need to be engaged to make the changes that will save our environment, our equality, our sciences and humanities. My hope is that everyone, in every field, will be involved and engaged in this work. Writing and performing these pieces is a reminder to myself not to get mired in the negativity — to stay positive and engaged through music daily.

We’re digging into that optimism musically in these pieces. The compositional rule was simply to build them all out of major triads. Each of the twelve pieces approaches that in a different way, and they were built for this collaborative and communicative ensemble with Anna Webber (alto and bass flutes, tenor sax), Tomeka Reid (cello), Jeff Parker (guitar), Nick Dunston (bass), and Kate Gentile (drums).

On some of the monthly pieces, we will be joined by trumpeters Dave Adewumi and Riley Mulherkar. I can’t wait to share the whole series with you. ENGAGE.

If you know someone who would like to hear this music and be engaged with Greenleaf Music, please pass this link along to them.

Hear the third single from Greg Ward’s ‘Stomping Off From Greenwood’

"Excerpt 1" from Greg Ward's upcoming album, Stomping Off From Greenwood, is available now. Greg talk about how the song came about:

Almost everyday, I try to sit down and compose. Usually, I'm just working on thematic development of some sort with hopes of coming out with even a small fragment that's worth turning into a new piece. Sometimes, a short thought presents itself. "Excerpt 1" is one of these.
