ENGAGE One: Showing Up

"Showing Up". That’s what so many of us did over the past year. Change is coming, and it feels like we’re collectively waking up to the bigger, more fundamental changes that need to happen. We won’t all agree about everything, but there is a sense of common purpose regarding the dangers of our current situation.

Jeff Parker plays a beautiful solo on this one, and I can’t tell you how stoked I was to play collectively with the full band.

Greenleaf Subscribers can stream and download "Showing Up"on Bandcamp. We've posted a Public Preview of the track here.

ENGAGE: Program Notes

Optimism. Action. Community.

ENGAGE is a direct descendant of UPLIFT, the 2018 set of compositions dedicated to positive action. We will be following up with all the organizations and causes invoked in that piece. And engaged in community and activism. People showed up in 2018, and our hope is that this trend will continue. We are going to need to be engaged to make the changes that will save our environment, our equality, our sciences and humanities. My hope is that everyone, in every field, will be involved and engaged in this work. Writing and performing these pieces is a reminder to myself not to get mired in the negativity — to stay positive and engaged through music daily.

We’re digging into that optimism musically in these pieces. The compositional rule was simply to build them all out of major triads. Each of the twelve pieces approaches that in a different way, and they were built for this collaborative and communicative ensemble with Anna Webber (alto and bass flutes, tenor sax), Tomeka Reid (cello), Jeff Parker (guitar), Nick Dunston (bass), and Kate Gentile (drums).

On some of the monthly pieces, we will be joined by trumpeters Dave Adewumi and Riley Mulherkar. I can’t wait to share the whole series with you. ENGAGE.

If you know someone who would like to hear this music and be engaged with Greenleaf Music, please pass this link along to them.

"Excerpt 1" from Greg Ward's upcoming album, Stomping Off From Greenwood, is available now. Greg talk about how the song came about:

Almost everyday, I try to sit down and compose. Usually, I'm just working on thematic development of some sort with hopes of coming out with even a small fragment that's worth turning into a new piece. Sometimes, a short thought presents itself. "Excerpt 1" is one of these.

Stream the track on Spotify here. And get all three singles when you pre-order the album on Bandcamp and iTunes.

The album will be released on January 11 and features guitarists Matt Gold and Dave Miller, bassist Matt Ulery and drummer Quin Kirchner.

'Scandal' makes Best of 2018 list in Rolling Stone

Rolling Stone has named Sound Prints Scandal one of the 20 Best Jazz Albums of 2018!

Here's what Hank Shteamer had to say about the record:

"For decades, narrow-minded observers have tried to keep jazz fragmented into discrete, even opposing strains: “straight-ahead,” “avant-garde” and so on. Fortunately, elite musicians such as trumpeter Dave Douglas and saxophonist Joe Lovano continue to ignore this line of thinking. The second release from Sound Prints — their collaboratively led band inspired by Wayne Shorter’s ever-unclassifiable aesthetic, and featuring the superb rhythm section of pianist Lawrence Fields, bassist Linda May Han Oh and drummer Joey Baron — finds the quintet settling into a wonderfully loose group M.O. Rubato themes, most by the leaders with a pair of pieces from Shorter’s legendary Sixties run for Blue Note, flow into searching, deep-listening improvisations where any group member can take the music anywhere they please. Scandal shows how, when great players dispense with categories, jazz can be everything at once."

The album is available on CD / digital on Bandcamp, iTunes, Amazon.
