New York Times Playlist features Greg Ward's 'Stomping Off From Greenwood'

The New York Times featured 'The Contender" from Greg Ward's Stomping Off From Greenwood in their Friday Playlist!

Here's what Giovanni Russonello had to say:

The alto saxophonist Greg Ward’s new album, Stomping Off From Greenwood, has the rusted, resonant sound of so much beat-driven jazz coming from Chicago natives today (Jeff Parker, Makaya McCraven, Marquis Hill). But its instrumentation — alto sax, two guitars, bass, drums — calls to mind another standout album from last year, Logan Richardson’s Blues People. Like Richardson on his album, Ward bobs gracefully through a coolly plotted improvisation on “The Contender” as his rhythm section handles a stop-and-start polyrhythm, creating friction and expectation and the illusion of an incline for Ward to climb.

You can read the full piece here and preview the track on Bandcamp:

'Brazen Heart Live' reviewed by PopMatters

Will Layman of PopMatters has written an in-depth review of the Brazen Heart Live at Jazz Standard, the 8-CD set by the Dave Douglas Quintet that was released in late 2018.

He sums up the complete set:

Listening to over eight hours of the band's music is a joy and a cinch, demonstrating that this classic jazz instrumentation can tackle many forms and create many pleasures. When this band is hitting on all cylinders, with the two horn interwoven, Mitchell's piano leaping and strumming and inventing, Oh down below and Royston kicking and stoking from all sides, it seems like it might be twice its size, a small orchestra or conversation, reverberation, and cross-currents. That Douglas constructed such an ingenious book for the band adds to its sense of breadth: in this music, we find groove, swing, plainsong, worship, ambivalence, clarity, joy, and heartbreak. You need a small orchestra to say all of that.

And, somehow, this quintet was a small orchestra, with Douglas's compositions and arrangements matched to its strengths and range, its expressive possibilities. Brazen Heart, Live at Jazz Standard is a symphony for what a jazz group can be when it is truly powerful and alive. It is a masterpiece of the form, the long form. And it will sit next to Miles Davis's Plugged Nickel recordings for decades to come.

The complete box set and the individual nights (Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday) are available from our Bandcamp store.

Rave reviews for Greg Ward’s ‘Stomping Off From Greenwood’

Here's a roundup of some of the accolades from Stomping Off From Greenwood, which is now available worldwide.

In his 4-star review in All About Jazz, Gareth Thompson says:

“Stomping Off From Greenwood sings with a depth of harmony to crack the hardest heart. Even as life’s rhythms scurry by, Ward’s tuneful touch remains unhurried, like a free spirit among go-getters.”

Chosen by Bandcamp Daily as album of the day, Mike West says:

“… the band’s interplay gestures beyond that storied starting point; its sound—intricate and yet edgy, melodic but distorted, with stomping rhythms and a confrontational mien—has as much in common with proto-punkers Television as with post-rockers Tortoise.”

Downbeat selected the album as an Editor’s Pick, saying:

Ward’s latest offering—suffused with not just players from, but also the exploratory fervor of Chicago’s top-tier performers—portends future successes, no matter his stomping grounds.”

Richard Kamins, in his Step Tempest blog, says:

Stomping Off From Greenwood makes me smile, bounce my feet, challenges me to listen with fresh ears, opening up to the myriad possibilities in this music, making me wish I was in the audience as the band developed this program leading uptown the recording.”

In his 5-star review for UK Vibe, Ian Ward has this to say about the album:

“It’s a heady mix of cerebral, heartfelt, hopeful, exploratory and inclusive. It focuses and uplifts. Musicianship is tophole. And it has two guitars.”

Previewing this weekend's release show for the Chicago Tribune, Howard Reich, calls Greg “… the saxophonist has proven himself at once uncategorizable and eminently listenable.”
