Ryan Keberle's 'The Hope I Hold' featured in Stereogum

Stereogum has chosen The Hope I Hold by Ryan Keberle & Catharsis as one of their key jazz releases for June 2019.

Phil Freeman has the following to say about the album's first single:

"'Despite the Dream' is a showcase for Meza’s clear, un-showy vocals. It’s a sharply political track, but its deceptively light rhythm and the steady pace of the horn solos keep it from becoming agitprop. Keberle’s solo has a joyful but bottom-heavy feel, like theme music for a cartoon elephant, while Scott Robinson’s saxophone has a big ’70s sound."

You can pre-order the album on Bandcamp and iTunes now. The album releases this Friday, June 28.

Listen to "Peering" by Ryan Keberle & Catharsis Trio

Check out the third single from the upcoming Ryan Keberle & Catharsis album The Hope I Hold.

“Peering” highlights the Catharsis Trio portion of the record, a kind of album-within-the-album that fits in seamlessly. Written by bassist, Jorge Roeder, it constitutes the first of the bassist’s original compositions to appear on a Catharsis recording. The track features Keberle’s burnished trombone melody before underscoring Camila Meza’s guitar/voice wizardry in an arrangement that deftly builds toward an emotional climax that highlights the masterful interplay between guitar, vocals, bass and trombone.

The track points up what is perhaps the defining characteristic of the Catharsis Trio—the fact that everyone composes. “The repertoire has really taken on a life of its own,” Keberle says. “From a compositional standpoint, this really has become a collective project. And for someone who’s been leading bands for a long time now, that’s a really fun thing to be a part of.”

When you pre-order the album on Bandcamp and iTunes now, you can download three singles right away. The album releases on June 28.

Will Layman takes a deep dive on the album, summing it up like this:

WBGO premieres first single from 'The Hope I Hold' by Ryan Keberle & Catharsis

WBGO is premiering the video for "Despite the Dream" as part of their weekly Take Five new release feature. It's the first single from The Hope I Hold, the upcoming album from Ryan Keberle and Catharsis.

Nate Chinen writes:

“Despite the Dream” incorporates lilting samba rhythm and a lyrical idea directly from Hughes: pay attention to Meza as she begins, “I’m the one who dreamed,” in a wistful tone. When she gets to the phrase “homeland of the free,” you’ll hear Keberle’s overdubbed voice, pushing against that premise: “The free, the free, who said the free? Not me.”
