Dave Douglas

Dave Douglas is a prolific trumpeter, composer, educator and entrepreneur from New York City known for the stylistic breadth of his work and for keeping a diverse set of ensembles and projects active simultaneously.

His unique contributions to improvised music have garnered distinguished recognition, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Aaron Copland award, and two GRAMMY® nominations. While his career spans more than 40 recordings as a leader, his active projects include his Quintet; Sound Prints, a quintet co-led with saxophonist Joe Lovano; Riverside, a quartet co-led with Chet Doxas; a duo with pianist Uri Caine; and, debuting in 2015, High Risk, an electronic music-influenced quartet with Mark Guiliana, Jonathan Maron and Shigeto.

Two 2015 projects demonstrate his virtuosity as well as his penchant for wide ranging explorations of new genres and creatively enriching partnerships with other musicians. High Risk, released June 2015, is a collaboration with electronic music artist Shigeto, backed by Jonathan Maron on bass and Mark Guiliana on drums. According to Seth Colter Walls in Pitchfork: “Simultaneously chill and surprising, it’s the sound of a group discovering a valid language, and then proceeding to push the limits of that new aesthetic.” Sound Prints: Live at the Monterey Jazz Festival captures the Wayne Shorter-inspired collaboration between Douglas and Lovano. Martin Johnson of the Wall Street Journal calls the music “diverse, abstract and yet highly accessible” while Fred Kaplan wrote in Stereophile: “They’re among the most vibrant, dizzying jazz bands around. Douglas and Lovano bounce off each other with an energy and virtuosity I’ve rarely seen either sustain in other settings (and that’s saying a lot).”

Douglas introduced his new quintet with a debut recording, Be Still, in September 2012. Featuring singer Aoife O’Donovan, Be Still marked the first time Douglas featured a vocalist on a recording. The album received critical praise, with the New York Times heralding it as “gorgeous and contemplative” and Fred Kaplan in Stereophile proclaiming it “one of the best-sounding new recordings that I’ve heard by anybody in quite a while.” The follow-up recording, Time Travel, was released in April 2013. In it, Troy Collins for AllAboutJazz.com wrote: “the quintet soars…Unconstrained by thematic concerns, Douglas demonstrates his all-encompassing aesthetic, revealing a broad capacity for expressionism.” Together with a sextet album called Pathways, Be Still and Time Travel were packaged with a DVD of studio performances and music videos as well as unreleased tracks and outtakes and released as part of a commemorative 50th Birthday Recordings box set in September 2013.

Since 2005, Douglas has operated his own record label, Greenleaf Music, releasing his own recordings as well as albums by other artists in the jazz idiom. Through his artist-friendly approach and innovative practices, he continues to prove himself a pioneer among artist-run labels.

Douglas has held several posts as an educator and continues to be very active as a director and programmer. He has been named the Artistic Director for the 2016 season of the Bergamo Jazz Festival, which occurs every year in March. Starting in 2012, Douglas was engaged for two years as International Jazz Artist in Residence at the Royal Academy of Music in London and launched his own Jazz Workshop, dedicated to enriching the musical experiences of younger players. From 2002 to 2012, he served as artistic director of the Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music at The Banff Centre in Canada. He is a co-founder and director of the Festival of New Trumpet Music, which was founded in 2002 to support new music by a diverse community of trumpet and brass players. He also co-hosts, with Michael Bates, a podcast called Noise From the Deep which was named the top jazz podcast by the JazzTimes critics poll in 2014.

“Dave Douglas is the unassuming king of independent jazz, a model of do-it-yourself moxie, initiative and artistic freedom.”

– Frank Alkyer, Publisher, Down Beat

CURRENT PROJECTS:

Dave Douglas & Sound Prints

A co-led quintet with Grammy Award-winning saxophonist and composer Joe Lovano. The all-star ensemble also includes up and coming pianist Lawrence Fields, bassist Linda May Han Oh, and drummer Joey Baron. Performing new original compositions by both Douglas and Lovano as well as brand new Wayne Shorter compositions in direct collaboration with Shorter, the quintet is a unique convergence of three unparalleled trajectories.

Soundprints’ debut recording will be available on Blue Note Records in Fall 2014.

Dave Douglas & Uri Caine Duo

Music for trumpet and piano. Douglas has paired up with longtime collaborator Uri Caine to record their first duo album, PRESENT JOYS. The duo explores a special collection of songs, hymns & improvisations inspired by the Sacred Harp and the shape-note tradition.

Dave Douglas & Riverside

Dedicated to exploring and expounding upon the musical legacy of the late jazz clarinetist and saxophonist Jimmy Giuffre. The quartet, co-led by Douglas, on trumpet, and Chet Doxas, on clarinet and tenor saxophone, has a rhythm section comprised of Steve Swallow (a former member of the Jimmy Giuffre 3) on electric bass and Jim Doxas (Chet’s brother and frequent collaborator) on drums. Riverside blends a love for improvised music, bluegrass, sacred hymns and Appalachian music to create an aesthetic rooted in both Americana and jazz.

RIVERSIDE, the group’s eponymously-titled debut, was released April 2014 on Greenleaf Music.

BY REQUEST:

Dave Douglas Quintet

One of Dave’s most popular and enduring projects, the Quintet has been in existence for over eight years. Current members are Jon Irabagon, Matt Mitchell, Linda Oh, and Rudy Royston. With a repertoire of dozens of original tunes, the quintet spans a wide range of contemporary jazz sounds in a lyrical, driving fashion. The quintet released its most recent recording, TIME TRAVEL to great critical acclaim.

Other recordings:

* BE STILL, a ballad-like set that presents a series of hymns and folk songs with an intensely personal connection.
* LIVE AT THE JAZZ STANDARD documented a whole week of music circa 2006 including 44 different compositions in 12 unique sets of music available for download at Greenleaf Music.

Dave Douglas & Keystone

Music for electric sextet with trumpet, tenor/soprano sax, rhodes, electric bass, drums, and turntables. Inspired by films, written for films, both new and old.

SPARK OF BEING, the newest release from Douglas’ Grammy-nominated Keystone band, is a collaboration between Douglas and experimental film-maker Bill Morrison. Spark Of Being is a film retelling the Frankenstein myth with accompanying Douglas soundtrack. Further info at Greenleaf Music.

MOONSHINE, released November 2007 on Greenleaf Music, is an album that moves musical genres forward into uncharted territory. Perhaps the most remarkable aspect is that the basis for this recording was a single performance in front of a live studio audience. After this release, Douglas brought this band to the Jazz Standard for 5 nights, and recorded it all as part of Greenleaf Music’s Download-Only Series.

KEYSTONE, the first DD&K studio recording, is available at Greenleaf Music as a two disc package: one CD of just the music, and one DVD containing two 1916 Arbuckle silent films with new musical accompaniment. This package was nominated for a Grammy in 2006. A live recording from Umea, Sweden from October 2005 is also available on Greenleaf Music’s specially priced Paperback Series. The recording captures the band with Gene Lake, Marcus Strickland, Adam Benjamin, Brad Jones, and DJ Olive. The New York City premiere of this project took place at Zankel Hall on February 18, 2006 as part of John Adams’ In Your Ear series.

Please check Shows for upcoming performance dates.

Dave Douglas & Brass Ecstasy

Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Tuba, and Drums. Born out of the Festival of New Trumpet Music in 2005, Brass Ecstasy nods to the ever-evolving spirit of brass music through soul-inflected compositions. The debut recording from this band, SPIRIT MOVES, features Dave joined by Vincent Chancey on french horn, Luis Bonilla on trombone, Marcus Rojas on tuba, and Nasheet Waits on drums and was released on Greenleaf Music, June 16, 2009. As a companion to Spirit Moves, two live download-only sets featuring post-Spirit Moves compositions are available via Greenleaf Music.

2011 brings the release of Brass Ecstasy’s performance at the 2010 Newport Jazz Festival. The CD, titled UNITED FRONT: BRASS ECSTASY AT NEWPORT, was recorded by WBGO Jazz 88 and presented as part of NPR’s live concert series.

More new music from Brass Ecstasy is scheduled for release June 2011 marking the launch of the Greenleaf Portable Series.

DAVE DOUGLAS BIG BAND

Douglas and Grammy-winning arranger/conductor Jim McNeely share conducting and arranging duties. First proposed by McNeely who stood as the 2008/2009 artist-in-residence with the Frankfurt Radio Bigband, this project couples three new Douglas compositions from his first large-scale work for bigband, Delighted States, with four past works reimagined by McNeely. The recording of this collaboration, A SINGLE SKY, released October 22nd, 2009 on Greenleaf. New visions of classic and freshly minted Douglas compositions. The lyrical and surprising sounds of Charms of the Night Sky, Tiny Bell Trio, refracted through the prism of kaleidoscopic jazz orchestra writing. Douglas solos on trumpet and Jim McNeely makes a rare appearance at the piano.

TRIO SENTIERO – THE TRIO OF THE TRAIL

Bringing the banjo into modern jazz, this drummer-less trio plays a book of new Douglas tunes that reflect Appalachian and American roots music. Noam Pikelny is the recent winner of the Steve Martin Prize for Banjo and Bluegrass, he’s also a groundbreaking pioneer in his own right and a member of the Punch Brothers.
