I just got wind of Wolfgangs Vault opening the flood gates of archived material dating back to the second Newport Festival via Ben Ratliff’s article at the Times.

“…posting free streams of a handful of performances from the 1959 Newport Jazz Festival, at wolfgangsvault.com: the first offerings include Count Basie, Dakota Staton and Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. By next Tuesday, when more are added, there will be 27 sets from that year’s jazz festival, including some by Ahmad Jamal, Joe Williams, Thelonious Monk and Horace Silver. The plan is to have hundreds more online in the coming months, from other years of Newport Jazz and from the Newport Folk Festival as well.”

A couple clicks later, I’m listening. And noticing that I can embed some of this tunage into this post. What nice guys over there, understanding word of mouth and all.

Looking forward to hearing more.

Happy weekend.

After a short tour out East and back, I’m back in the office working away. It was a great trip, but good to be home and away from rest stops and fast food.

A few things that were sent to me over the weekend that I wasn’t able to find time to post…

First, long-time Greenleaf friend Helen Money has a cool new video on the ‘Tube directed by Nelson Chan. The music is a cover of the classic Minutemen tune “Political Song for Michael Jackson to Sing.” Helen’s new album is due out November 3rd and comes highly recommended.

“I am a very big Fan of Michael Jackson, and am quite angry on the fact that We only started to pay attention to him only after his passing. so here is my tribute to him in a Halloween spirit. “let the fouls choke on their own gold!” R.I.P. MJ –Nelson Chan

Monster Cable releases Miles Davis Tribute headphones. Quite a perplexing product. But like most things with Miles’ name on it, I’d want one — if I didn’t already have a sweet set of ‘phones.

Miles Headphones

Miles Davis Tribute Jazz Headphones are designed and precision tuned with Miles and the unique acoustic tones of jazz in mind.

What would have been cooler than just getting the cans is if the headphones were somehow preloaded with all those complete boxsets. Some Miles iPod or whatever. Still, would love to at least test out Pharoah’s Dance or The Ghetto Walk to see how they sound.

New Henry Threadgill album preview at Destination: Out.

Awesome.

A new series was unveiled this week at A Blog Supreme. Jazz Now is a series of posts from some younger folks in the jazz community listing their Tops Lists of albums from the last 10 years. Each post has streaming music from each of the chosen albums.

Today, Lucas Gillan from the very-cool AccuJazz Radio offered his list which included Mehldau’s Largo — a hugely popular record in my college days — and a local Chicago favorite Herculaneum (who just released their third record). More lists to follow.

As a lover of Top 5 lists, really looking forward to digging on what I hope will be some previously unheard music.

New post at Destination: Out offering a few tracks from Rashied Ali’s career.

From Destination: Out

Despite being on an August hiatus, we couldn’t let the passing of Rashied Ali linger too long without adding our own tribute. Rashied Ali was one of most important drummers in jazz – both for his controversial tenure with John Coltrane and his remarkable second act as owner of both Survival Records and loft space Ali’s Alley, and for the stellar ensembles he led.

We were lucky enough to have Geoff Countryman on tour with Brass Ecstasy in Europe this summer. Upon return, we were sent a boatload of clips from each of the bands performances as well as some candid shots of classic on-the-road happenings captured by Mr. Countryman. So we assembled a little montage for your viewing pleasure. As you watch, you will be hearing a track from the On Stage download series we put up last month called “Spirit Moves.”

Also, at the GreenleafMusicHQ YouTube page, we’ve made a new playlist compiling all the Brass Ecstasy videos — the live Tiny Desk Concert, this montage, as well as the in-studio videos from the DVD part of Spirit Moves.

Enjoy.

A few rock-related links to pass on in case you’re interested…

New Radiohead Tune Leaked – “These Are My Twisted Words?

Jonny from Dead Air Space: So here’s a new song, called ‘These Are My Twisted Words’.

We’ve been recording for a while, and this was one of the first we finished. We’re pretty proud of it.

There’s other stuff in various states of completion, but this is one we’ve been practicing, and which we’ll probably play at this summer’s concerts. Hope you like it.

It seems they actually leaked it. Perhaps a piece of the “great idea” Thom mentioned in a recent interview. Never a dull moment with those guys.

New Jim O’Rourke Album – “The Visitor”

Stream a preview of a track at the new Drag City website. More details to follow, I’m sure.

Bob Dylan mistaken for Hobo

From boingboing.com – New Jersey police detained 68-year old American music star Bob Dylan recently, after a young officer failed to recognize him. A disheveled Dylan was wearing a hoodie, wandering around in the rain looking at a house for sale. The 24-year-old female officer was responding to a phone call from the occupants of a home that had a “For Sale” sign on it. The residents were called in with a report of an “eccentric-looking old man” in their yard .

I can’t say enough good things about Donny — and not just because we’ve released a record of his. Fantastic dude and one helluva player. It was a pleasure to work with him on his first trio record last year. And now, he has a new release, Declaration, on Sunnyside Records coming out on the 11th of August. They and Donny have been kind enough to allow us to stream a tune from the record here on the blog. Click on the track name on our sidebar player to listen to the the title track.

Better to let Donny inform about where the project came from…

From an interview at AllAboutJazz: “After my last recording, Recommended Tools, which is a trio recording on Greenleaf Records, I wanted to shift gears and do a larger project that would push me into new areas composition-wise and orchestration wise, so the overall idea was for me to get into new and different territory as a composer and as an improviser,” McCaslin says. “I hadn’t written for a brass group before so this was new for me. Initially the idea was having the brass as padding but the more I wrote the more involved the brass became. The addition of brass gives me more options to play off as an improviser as well.”

I was lucky enough to get an advance of the tunes and have been listening intently since.

Donny seems just as comfortable writing moodier tunes like the title track (streaming), as he does writing more angular tunes like the aptly titled burner “Rock Me” (check out Donny and Monder ripping on that!). And track-to-track, there are so many great moments of tension and release that make this such a pleasurable album in full. Two tunes from the Recommended Tools sessions get the large-ensemble treatment, too. One of those, “Late Night Gospel,” is one of my favorite DM tunes and here it closes Declaration in the most beautiful way.

More from Donny…

“I wanted this to be a beautiful record as it was recorded just before the birth of our daughter Claire,” McCaslin says. “She’s here now and is such a blessing to my life. My hope is that this record conveys some of feelings that have run so strongly through me during the process of birth and new parenthood; joy, wonder, and tremendous love.”

Highly recommended that you preorder this record. A must have IMO. Click here to go to the Amazon page.

The group: Donny McCaslin (tenor sax), Ben Monder (guitar), Scott Colley (bass), Ed Simon (piano), Antonio Sanchez (drums), with Pernell Saturnino (percussion), Alex “Sasha” Sipiagin (trumpet), Tatum Greenblatt (trumpet), Chris Komer (horn), Marshall Gilkes (trombone), and Marcus Rojas (tuba/bass trombone)
