All comments are in. The commenters with the correct answer were tossed into my personal Greenleaf Music Hat and chosen at random. The five winners are:

Bob (last name not present)
David French
Chad McCullough
Peter Sardellitto
Damon Shulenberger

As much as I wanted to make sure Herman Melville made the show, that’s the luck of the draw.

Congrats guys. Enjoy the show!

In other Keystone related news, as we celebrate the world premiere this weekend, we’ve slashed the prices of the Keystone: Live at Jazz Standard sets — $5 for MP3s, $7 for FLACs, and a similarly price-adjusted Full Book. Better snatch up those sets while the deal is fresh. And don’t forget about the Jazz Standard poster.

April 24th, 2010 will see the World Premiere of Dave Douglas’ collaboration with Bill Morrison, Spark Of Being, at Stanford University. You can purchase tickets here. But before you do, answer the question below in the comments section of this post for a chance to win yourself tickets.

Keystone

Question: What is the origin of the band name Keystone?

Answer: ?

We will announce the winner(s) next week. Good luck!

For fairness, I have closed the comments from view. Once you submit, you will not be able to see the comment until I publish the winner.

It’s contest time again. Due to the overwhelming response to our Dave Douglas Mixtape contest this past summer, we’ve decided to hold another mix tape contest of sorts. And this time, we’ll be pressing a Best of Greenleaf Music volume 1 on vinyl based in part on your submissions. No one knows our catalog better than the community we have here. So take a moment and read the rules / requirements below.

Contest
Rules / Requirements

+ Submit (2) Sides (A / B) with your picks of the best tracks from the Greenleaf catalog via the Comment Section of this post
+ Each side can be no more than 20:59 in length (no exceptions!)
+ You choose the tracks
+ Your tracklist must include more than two Greenleaf artists
+ Tracks must be taken from the Greenleaf catalog (in other words, albums on other labels by the same artist do not count)
+ Submissions close October 16th

How the contest works.

At the end of the scheduled time frame, we will tally up how many
times each track was used from each list. The most chosen tracks will be put into a pool of music with picks from our artists. We will generate the final tracklist in house and release an extremely limited pressing on vinyl.

Digital files will also be released, and free with purchase of your vinyl copy and as always, to our subscribers.

Prizes.

Five randomly-chosen people who submit their Best of Greenleaf list will receive one of the Limited Edition LP’s signed by all Greenleaf artists on the album.

Each person who submits will have their full name credited in the liner notes (unless anonymity is your thing).

Best of luck. We’re looking forward to seeing your list.

Festival of New Trumpet Music is offering free tickets for this weekend’s Clean Feed double bill: Bay Area trumpeter Darren Johnston and NYC’s own Kirk Knuffke. Saturday, September 19, 2009 at 8pm, at the Cornelia Connelly Center in NYC.

However, it seems you must:

“Name 3 brass players Bobby Bradford has recorded alongside during his career (either as a sideman or a leader.) First 10 people that email us at fontmusic@gmail.com with a correct answer get one free ticket.”

Bobby will be in NYC October 3 & 4 accepting FONT’s Award of Recognition, and performing alongside Baikida Carroll, David Murray, Marty Ehrlich, Mark Dresser, Benny Powell, and Andrew Cyrille.

Update: Still a few left. Hint – one of the players was Don Cherry.

Update 2: FONT contest is now closed. See you down there.

Our 2nd Winner has been announced. Congratulations to Patrick Boyle.

One winner left. Submit your mixtape now to win. Click here to submit.

A name was picked from a hat last night. And that name is of our first winner: Ethan Rioux. From everyone here at Greenleaf, thanks for your mixtape and congratulations.

We are still taking submissions. Everyone who has already done so is still eligible to win the next two prizes. Updates on that very soon.

The Spirit Moves Sheet Music has been added to the Greenleaf store here. These charts — PDFs of the full scores and individual parts — are included in the EXTENDED and COMPLETE bundles as well as our Subscriber Option. Those who have already ordered, log in and check in your MY ORDERS section for that download link. And of course, any technical difficulties you run into, please send me an email and I’ll help you out.

With so much happening here, where do I begin.  The beginning, I guess…

First and foremost, the SPIRIT MOVES Preorder ends at 11:59pm EST tomorrow.  That means that you have until then to get in on those special offers we’ve been talking about — the free live set from the upcoming Brass Ecstasy Jazz Standard shows this week, the signed copies (almost sold out), etc.  And remember, Subscribers get a 2nd live set free.  Click here to get to the Preorder page.

Second, as mentioned, Brass Ecstasy is kicking off the Spirit Moves Tour this Thursday at Jazz Standard.  Then on to DC, Ottawa, and Chicago, followed by the European leg of the tour.  Click here for all those dates (and there are a lot of them!).

Another show to hit up this week in NYC — Michael Bates’ Outside Sources (with Chris Speed) at The Stone, Tuesday the 16th.  Downbeat is at 10PM.  More info here.

Lastly, our Mixtape Contest is rocking.  Thanks to all who have submitted so far.  We’ll announce the first of 3 winners later this week.

What is a mixtape exactly?

A mixtape, which usually reflects the musical tastes of its compiler, can range from a casually selected list of favorite songs, to a conceptual mix of songs linked by a theme or mood, to a highly personal statement tailored to the tape’s intended recipient. Essayist Geoffrey O’Brien has called the personal mixtape “the most widely practiced American art form,” and many mixtape enthusiasts believe that by carefully selecting and ordering the tracks in a mix, an artistic statement can be created that is greater than the sum of its individual songs, much as an album of pop music in the post-Beatles era can be considered as something more than a collection of singles.

Disclaimer:
Greenleaf is teaming up with Downbeat Magazine for this promotion. All participants will receive an email from Downbeat regarding subscription. This is a list that you can opt out of any time. Your email will not be sold or given away to anyone else.
