What is a mixtape exactly?

A mixtape, which usually reflects the musical tastes of its compiler, can range from a casually selected list of favorite songs, to a conceptual mix of songs linked by a theme or mood, to a highly personal statement tailored to the tape’s intended recipient. Essayist Geoffrey O’Brien has called the personal mixtape “the most widely practiced American art form,” and many mixtape enthusiasts believe that by carefully selecting and ordering the tracks in a mix, an artistic statement can be created that is greater than the sum of its individual songs, much as an album of pop music in the post-Beatles era can be considered as something more than a collection of singles.

Greenleaf is teaming up with Downbeat Magazine for this promotion. All participants will receive an email from Downbeat regarding subscription. This is a list that you can opt out of any time. Your email will not be sold or given away to anyone else.

  • Jim Tuerk says:

Glad someone referenced High Fidelity. One of my all-time top 5 favorite movies. I’d love to hear DJ Rob Gordon’s DD mix.

  • Chris Kellett says:

I was reflecting on the process of making the tape after I finished last night and why I enjoyed it so much. Thinking back on the mix tapes I’ve made in the past, it was an opportunity to pull apart someone’s catalogue and reconstruct it in a way that made sense to me personally. Unfortunately, in the last 5-10 years, I’ve lost the drive to do that with the advent of iTunes and having 8157 songs to choose from at any time.

However, I think I’ll start making “mix tapes” (or playlists restricted to 30 minutes) again simply to force myself to look at different artists in more personal ways. Even if that 30 minute constraint will frequently cause me to scream in frustration (I desperately wanted Elks Club as my last track as a kind of silly, upbeat ending akin to Miles’ Nothing Like You. But it was too long!!! Still, the triangle hit at the end of Mary’s Idea has a similar sly humour to it.)

  • Jim Tuerk says:

The mixtape is such a great way to give someone just enough of a taste of the music you want them to get into — that’s how we used to use it anyway. Putting tracks they may well know next to tracks they would have never picked up.

Setting that time restriction is key in iTunes. Or else you end up with 18 albums on a playlist, most likely on shuffle.

I’ve made 4 more DD mixes, each with a different person in mind to listen. So much fun going through that music again and again.
